As a family photographer serving the Tri-Cities and Greater Vancouver area for over 15 years, one of the most common questions I hear from parents is: “How often should we have family photos taken?” It’s a great question, and the answer depends on your family’s stage of life, your values, and how you want to remember these fleeting years.

Family photos are so much more than a quick snapshot for your holiday card. They’re a way to document your family’s growth, celebrate your unique connection, and create heirlooms you’ll cherish for decades. In our busy lives, it’s easy to let years slip by without a single photo of everyone together, especially with parents behind the camera instead of in the frame.
Having regular family photos taken is about creating a visual legacy. When you print and display these images, you’re reminding your children every day that they are loved, seen, and part of something special. There’s nothing like flipping through an album and seeing how your family has grown and changed over the years.

For most families in the Tri-Cities and Greater Vancouver, I recommend booking professional family photos once a year. Annual sessions are the perfect way to:
If an annual session feels overwhelming, aim for every two to three years at a minimum. The key is consistency, don’t wait until you “look perfect” or the kids have grown out of their awkward stage. Every year tells a different story, and those in-between moments are often the most meaningful.

There are certain seasons in life when more frequent family photos are a wonderful idea:
1. Newborns and Babies:
The first year flies by in a blur of milestones. I recommend newborn photos within the first two weeks, followed by sessions at 6 months (sitting) and 12 months (first birthday). These capture the rapid changes and sweet details you’ll want to remember forever.
2. Toddlers and Preschoolers:
Little ones change so quickly! Annual photos are ideal, but you might also consider a spring and fall session to capture different stages (and weather!) in BC.
3. School-Age Children:
Once kids are in school, an annual session is usually enough to document their growth and changing interests. Many families coordinate these with the start of a new school year or as part of a holiday tradition.
4. Teens and Graduates:
Don’t stop once the kids hit their teens! Senior portraits and graduation sessions are incredibly meaningful, marking the transition from childhood to adulthood.
5. Major Milestones:
Weddings, anniversaries, family reunions, new homes, or even the addition of a beloved pet, these are all moments worth celebrating with a professional photo session.

As a photographer, I want every family to get the most value from their session. Here are my top tips for making your family photos truly special:

Working with a local photographer means you benefit from someone who understands the unique beauty of our region, the best times for golden hour light, and even how to handle a classic BC rainstorm. I always offer flexible rescheduling and backup indoor options, so you never miss out on your family session due to weather.
I love working with families year after year, watching your kids grow, and helping you create a visual legacy that’s truly your own.

If you’re thinking about updating your family portraits, I’d love to help you create memories that last. Whether it’s your first session or an annual tradition, let’s make it fun, relaxed, and truly you.
