WHERE WILL MY SESSION BE HELD?
There are two options. We can do it in your home which is my personal fave. There’s all this nostalgia and pretty pockets of light. Generally I find that families are more comfortable in their own home. The kids have their favourite toys and you can do activities together like snuggles in the bed, making a smoothie or cookies, reading books and just generally hanging out like a lazy Sunday. It’s a super special way to tell your story.
Otherwise… An outdoor location. We can hit the beach, go exploring, find a swing by a creek, hit the cafes and get burgers and milkshakes, go for a picnic in the fields. Heck, we can even go camping! Think about re-creating a family tradition together. It’s always good to have an activity as it gives you all something to do with your hands and adds dynamic to the photos. Plus, the photos look pretty rad!
HOW MANY POSES WILL WE DO? HOW MANY PICTURES WILL YOU TAKE?
There’s no easy answer to either question, as the flow of the session really depends on the people involved! I try not to do too many formal “poses,” but rather have a fun time together, playing different games or sit down for little conversations, anything to take the kids’ minds off the camera! I do stop at times and set up group or individual portraits, but I try to keep it as natural and fluid as possible.
CAN WE SEE EVERY. SINGLE. PICTURE?
Um, no. Trust me, it’s for your own good! First I weed out the obvious rejects…closed eyes, awkward positioning, unflattering angle, etc. Then I also narrow down very similar images to pick the very best, otherwise you would be completely overwhelmed and order selection would be excruciatingly hard!
WHAT IF MY KIDS ARE NOT IN THE MOOD?
We’ve all been there… I think it’s Murphy’s Law of parenting, the more you need them to behave, the more they act out! No worries, the best thing for you to do is stay calm and let me take over. I promise, a little distraction and a few silly faces and most kids can be channeled back on track. Threats and angry words from mom & dad have yet to make a kid relax and smile…trust me! I may need to pull the kids away from you for at least a little bit, and please know this is not personal. It’s just a fact of life – most kids just listen better and, most importantly, act more natural, when they are alone.
DURING YOUR SESSION…
· Please don’t worry about whether your children are smiling. I’ll take care of them. Not every portrait needs a smile.
· It’s confusing and overwhelming for kids to see multiple adults shouting, waving, and jumping around in different places. Let me act the fool first. Then, if I need some help, I’ll ask you for it and let you know where I need you stand.
· Children feed off of their parents’ energy. If you’re happy and enjoying yourself, they will be, too. If you’re anxious, they will be, too.
· Don’t worry about standing still, looking at the camera, or what to do with your hands. I’ll be there to help position you for formal portraits and encourage interaction for casual portraits. I love capturing images of family members looking at one another, rather than at the camera, so if a member of your family does something funny, enjoy it! Smile at them, not at me.
IS THERE ANYTHING I NEED TO BRING TO MY SESSION?
For most sessions, the answer is: nope! If you’re planning a documentary session, you’ll be responsible for planning whatever activity(ies) are going to be part of your session, in which case you’ll need to supply the appropriate materials where needed. If you’re doing an outdoor family shoot, it’s always best to pack the essentials. Sunscreen, water, a change of clothes (especially for the kiddos), snacks and also a little one’s favourite toy. I know this is a lot of stuff to bring so pop it all in a bag and we can put it down near where we shoot.
CAN I BRING MY DOG(S)?
Yes! Dogs are family, too. Your dog won’t likely appear in ALL of the photos, so it’s worth considering where you’d like to keep your dog once their starring role is finished. Please consider whether your four-legged friend will cope with being tied up nearby and whether you’ll be able to focus on your partner instead of what your fur baby is doing off-camera. Bringing an extra person along to keep your dog company when his/her starring role is finished is encouraged.
WHY CAN’T YOU SCHEDULE MY SESSION WHEN IT’S MOST CONVENIENT FOR ME?
I am going to do my very best to work with your schedule and mine. For outdoor sessions, I prefer to shoot when the light is best. This happens to be near sunrise and sunset. The light is so gorgeous at these times! The light is much more harsh in the middle of the day and isn’t all that flattering. Trust me, you do not want photos in the harsh sun. It will cast shadows over your faces and you’ll be a squinting hot mess. Golden hour is so flattering and truly creates a magic to your photos. Adjust your schedule just a tad this one time and I promise it will be worth it!
For an in-home shoot, we have much more flexibility, but I would also prefer to shoot in your home when the light is at its best. This will depend on a number of factors: windows, which way your home is facing, etc. In home sessions are usually scheduled for 10am and 2pm.
WE SURVIVED THE SESSION! WHAT’S NEXT?
I get all your images onto the computer and go through them to remove the blinks, blurs, and weird faces that inevitably occur. I do full edits of the very best of the remaining photos and I will use my creative vision to pick the images which I feel best captures the heart and and essence of your family and/or subject. Within 2-3 weeks of your session, you receive an email containing your gallery access info online gallery through shootproof.com; you follow this link and have 2 weeks to view and share your images, as well as place orders. You can also share the link with friends and family so they can view your session as many times, they may be able to help you narrow down your favourites too! Once you have selected your included images and any you wish to purchase I will send you a gallery of high-resolution images, with no watermarks, to download. I also suggest all of your digital images be stored in two different locations, on your computer and in online cloud storage or on a separate hard drive for safe keeping.
